No lubricant in a vehicle can last forever & that includes the ac compressor oil in the ac system. 90% of all ac problems are caused by the compressor oil not replaced regularly leading to lost of lubrication for the compressor resulting in hotter ac temperatures. In the BMW i8, it specifies the use of an electric ac compressor & a new green refrigerant R1234yf. KoolTec would first remove all old compressor oil & a new oil of the right type & volume is injected with the correct volume of R1234yf.
